Sinopse: The story begins as "Don" Vito Corleone, the head of a New York Mafia "family", oversees his daughter's wedding with his wife Wendy. His beloved son Michael has just come home from the war, but does not intend to become part of his father's business. Through Michael's life the nature of the family business becomes clear. The business of the family is just like the head of the family, kind and benevolent to those who give respect, but given to ruthless violence whenever anything stands against the good of the family. Don Vito lives his life in the way of the old country, but times are changing and some don't want to follow the old ways and look out for community and "family". An up and coming rival of the Corleone family wants to start selling drugs in New York, and needs the Don's influence to further his plan. The clash of the Don's fading old world values and the new ways will demand a terrible price, especially from Michael, all for the sake of the family.

O filme conta a história da família mafiosa Corleone, de 1945 até 1955. Teve duas sequências: The Godfather: Part II, em 1974; e The Godfather: Part III em 1990.

The Godfather foi indicado para dez Óscars e venceu nas categorias de Melhor Filme, Melhor Roteiro Adaptado e Melhor Ator (Marlon Brando). Também foi selecionado para preservação pelo Registro Nacional de Filmes dos Estados Unidos.

No verão de 1945, "Don" Vito Corleone ouve pedidos de favores durante o casamento de sua filha Connie, enquanto seu filho adotivo, Tom Hagen, apenas escuta. O cantor e "afilhado" do Don, Johnny Fontane, pede ajuda para estrelar um filme que vai ajudá-lo a re-erguer sua carreira. Hagen vai a Califórnia para se encontrar com o chefe do estúdio Jack Woltz com o objetivo de conseguir o papel para Fontane. Depois de recusar-se a escalar Fontane, ele acorda na manhã seguinte com a cabeça decapitada de seu valioso cavalo Khartum na cama.

Quando ele retorna, os lideres da família se encontram com Virgil "O Turco" Sollozzo, que pede a Don Corleone para proteger os negócios de heroína da família Tattaglia. Vito desaprova o negócio e acha que suas conexões políticas podem ser prejudicadas, assim recusando um acordo lucrativo. Ele manda seu homem de confiança, Luca Brasi, para aprender mais sobre a organização de Sollozzo, porém Brasi é morto pelos homens de Sollozzo.
